Overview
Description
The MA in African Languages (Coursework) at the University of Johannesburg is a postgraduate degree that combines advanced coursework with independent research in African language studies. It is designed to deepen students’ knowledge of African linguistics, literature, and cultural expression while developing strong research skills.
Students take a research methodology module and select from advanced topics such as sociolinguistics, semantics, verbal structures, oral literature, poetry, and literary theory. Alongside the coursework, they complete a minor dissertation, which allows them to conduct original research on a focused topic in African languages.
The programme prepares graduates for careers in academia, translation, language policy, publishing, education, and research institutions, and also provides a strong foundation for further doctoral study.
