The department has always played an important role in the Universiti Malaya as a major referral center for Malaysia. Patients are referred from general practitioners and specialists both within the hospital and also from outstation. They also attend via the Accident and Emergency department and through the Walk in clinics.

The Cardiothoracic Surgery (Clinical) is committed to increasing future experts in the field of surgery. Students are exposed to the finer points of surgery, as well as equipped with comprehensive preparation in the fundamentals. Students will be able to improve the care of surgical patients, and effectively addresses the demands of practicing surgeons, surgery residents, medical students, surgical patients, and the public.

General requirements
- General University Requirements: Fulfill the General University Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree Qualification: Possessed a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate
- At least one (1) year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate
- Qualifies for registration as a Medical Practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
- Pass the entrance assessment and interview and has passed MedEx or MRCS (Part 1 and 2)
- 6 Months minimum of General Surgery posting and 6 Months minimum of Cardiothoracic Surgery posting prior to application
- Candidates who are non-Malaysian citizen will be required to undertake and satisfactorily complete a three (3) months period of clinical attachment in the Department of Surgery prior to acceptance into the program.
