Medical Device Development from Munster Technological University is aimed at those interested in developing human-centric biomedical devices, products, services, and experiences.

Key facts

The course is designed to provide a new and unique skills profile, combining engineering and medicine with embedded transversal skills. This will strengthen an engineer’s ability to understand the clinical applications of medical devices and facilitate the healthcare professional to directly input into the design/development phase of MedTech products.

This course can be taken full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

The blended delivery ensures a mixture of in-person and online classes to provide flexibility.

There are 8 taught modules, 50% will be delivered in MTU and 50% in UCC, along with a project.

This will be a design and development project, reflective of industry practices, as an alternative to a final thesis.

General requirements

Applicants must have a minimum of a Second-Class Grade 1 (2.1) Honours Degree (NFQ level 8) in engineering, science, medicine or allied healthcare degree (or cognate discipline).
Consideration under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may also be given to applicants who do not meet the above entry requirements but who have relevant professional experience in a suitable field.
All applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency (IELTS score of at least 6.5 with no section below 6.0). English language tests must be undertaken no more than two years prior to the start of the programme.
