Overview
The Teaching Chinese Language and Culture program offered by University College Dublin considers knowledge on how the language works will be used to address challenges faced by L2 learners with Chinese language structures that have been proven challenging for English speakers. In so doing, the module equips Chinese teachers with tools to be more effective in their language practice. Hands-on practice is addressed in another module of the programme, Teaching Practice.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Modern Chinese language structure, including its writing, phonetics, lexicon and syntax.
- Analyze and compare the linguistic features of Mandarin Chinese with those of the English language, particularly in areas such as sounds and syntax.
- Develop effective teaching strategies for Mandarin Chinese, focusing on aspects such as Chinese characters, pinyin, syntax, and specific grammatical structures.
- Critically engage with current linguistic theories and research related to Modern Chinese language, applying these to the analysis of language phenomena.
- Present and discuss complex linguistic concepts related to Mandarin Chinese clearly and effectively, both in written essays and teaching presentations.
