Overview
The Transnational History program provides an opportunity to study transnational processes and phenomena from the 19th century to the present in an international environment consisting of students and teachers from different countries. It brings these processes and phenomena that transcend national, state and cultural boundaries to life through specific cases, but its aim is not the history of a particular macro-region or state. In doing so, it allows you to develop the ability to analyse the historical roots of contemporary global issues and to better navigate today’s interconnected world.
Transnational History combines the acquisition of subject knowledge with advanced historical research methods. It emphasises the development of critical thinking, work with texts and sources, intercultural communication, and analytical skills. The program is unique in linking historical research with contemporary challenges such as economic globalization, migration, war and its effects, or social and political transformations – issues that transcend the nation-state. You will have considerable freedom to pursue topics that match your interests, with opportunities to focus on areas such as Social and Economic Change, Migration and Minorities, or Conflict and Violence, as well as on the ways the past is used and interpreted in the present – combining academic insight with practical application.
After graduation
As a graduate, you can find employment in diplomacy, public administration, cultural institutions, the media, NGOs or multinational companies, where your knowledge of historical contexts and global connections is a significant added value. The program also prepares you for further study in doctoral programs in history and related fields – in particular the English-taught Modern History program offered at our faculty.
