This European Languages, Cultures and Societies in Contact programme from University of Pavia aims to train experts in European languages, cultures, and societies who will work in intercultural communication and international relations, preparing future professionals for managing linguistic, cultural, and social diversity in the European environment.
Key Features
The high level of linguistic competence in two European languages required for admission allows the programme to focus not on language acquisition, which is a prerequisite, but on deepening interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. This includes:
- Linguistic and communicative competence aimed at understanding and producing written and oral texts for international communication and in multilingual and multicultural contexts.
- Digital, technological, and IT skills for managing texts across various media.
- Understanding the cultural and socio-economic landscape of the studied language areas.
- Basic competencies in computational text analysis for the study and understanding of linguistic, cultural, and social phenomena.

- In order to apply to the Master’s Programme, students should have a Bachelor’s Degree (or recognized equivalent) in one of the following areas: Modern Languages, Philology, Culture, History, International Relations, and other Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH).
- Candidates must know at least two languages at B2 level (according to the Common European Framework) among the following: Finnish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, besides English as a lingua franca.
