Offered through the Department of Surgery, in partnership with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), The Master of Surgical Education from the University of Melbourne caters to the unique challenges of teaching and learning in diverse clinical settings and recognises the advanced technologies that are increasingly important in surgery and surgical training.
Now with all subjects being delivered online, the Master of Surgical Education is designed with the flexibility to accommodate practising surgeons as they become world-class educators.
Who this course is for
This course is designed for fellows, trainees and non-surgeons who contribute to surgical education programs and want to become educators. This includes:
- Surgeons
- Veterinary surgeons
- Clinical proceduralists
- Obstetricians
- Gynaecologists.
Programme Structure
Course structure- To gain the Master in Surgical Education, you must complete four core subjects, four elective subjects, plus either the Research or Coursework pathway.
- Most participants in this course are busy professionals undertaking studies in conjunction with clinical commitments, so flexibility is key. The program is delivered part-time, with students expected to enrol in two subjects per semester, most of which run online (e.g. webinars, moderated discussions, and tutorials), accessible online, and spread over 13-week semesters.

- A Doctor of Medicine or Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (or equivalent qualification), AND
- At least two years of documented relevant clinical work experience.
