Intended learning outcomes
Upon completion of the The MDHS (Population and Global Health) Master of Philosophy from the University of Melbourne, the graduate researcher will be able to:- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge that includes recent developments in one or more disciplines
- independently investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established theories to different bodies of knowledge or practice
- demonstrate advanced knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the field of work or learning
- independently design and execute a substantial piece of research that makes a contribution to knowledge within their field
- disseminate research findings effectively in the professional arena
- demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, research ethics and integrity.
Programme Structure
Overview- You will enrol in a thesis subject and undertake a research project for the duration of the degree.
- The normal period of candidature is 18 months for full-time candidates with the possibility of up to 6 months extension.
- You are required to complete a minimum of 6 months full-time research at the University in order to benefit from planning, conducting and writing up your research within a University community and environment.
- Normally the entire degree is undertaken at the University.
- You will have appropriately experienced academics available to arrange a course of supervised research designed to suit your requirements and interests.
- You may be required to supplement your research program by attendance at, or enrolment in, additional subjects if considered necessary by the supervisor(s).
- You are expected to attend departmental seminars over the period of their candidature.
- Academic progress is reviewed regularly throughout the degree.

1. In order to be considered for entry, you must have completed:
- a four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and have achieved a minimum weighted average of (University of Melbourne) 75% or higher;
- a masters degree in a relevant discipline which includes a substantial research component equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study and achieved a minimum weighted average of (University of Melbourne) 75% or higher.
- prior academic performance and, if relevant, professional qualifications;
- performance at interview;
- understanding of the research question to be explored;
- motivation and capacity to complete the course in a timely manner;
- relevant prior research and/or professional experience ; and
- referee reports.
