A critical and nuanced understanding of music and its role in human life and society is of vital importance for the grasp of our past, present and future. Earlier students in the programme often have a background in music studies on different levels, but may also have taken other Bachelor's programmes with considerable musical components paired with a strong intellectual interest in music.
Key Features
This Musicology Master's programme at Uppsala University is designed to give you a strong and broad competence in the scholarly study of music and music-related phenomena in all their forms. You will acquire and develop precision of analysis of music both in audible forms, as preserved in musical notation, and of writings concerning music.You will deepen your knowledge on a specialised topic by writing a thesis, under the supervision of experienced experts. As a student in the programme, you will take both mandatory courses and elective courses on a wide array of topics. Our alumni have pursued careers as doctoral students, or work within academia, journalism, public service, music administration, the music archive and library sectors, etc.Programme Structure

General requirements
- A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university.
- Also required is 60 credits in musicology.
- Language requirements
- Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries.
