Overview
At the Physics of Condensed Matter programme offered at Pavol Jozef Safárik University in Kosice students acquire knowledge of classical and quantum physics, both theoretical and experimental, which they are able to expand independently in their future carrier.
As a part of their education in mathematics and informatics they learn modern computational methods, acquire programing skills and knowledge in using computers in automated experimental setups. This part of their professional profile is supplemented by skills in measurement and acquisition of low-level signals, as well as computer simulations of magnetic properties of molecules and micromagnetic systems, respectively.
Special courses such as Solid-state magnetism, Low-temperature physics, Structure of solids, Quantum theory of solid state, Physics of metals and semiconductors, Nanomaterials, Unconventional metallic materials profile the study. Attention is also devoted to experimental methods in solid state physics. The student can select his expertise by focusing on the physics of magnetic phenomena with the emphasis on magnetostructural correlations, or on the physics of low temperatures with the emphasis on low-dimensional magnetism and macroscopic quantum phenomena.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates of all specializations of the study programme are able to creatively apply the knowledge acquired during their studies to solve a wide range of research problems, as well as practical problems. Involving students directly in research teams during master´s studies support students´ creative abilities and critical thinking. Students will learn to work independently with the literature, to search for and then actively use the acquired new knowledge related to the addressed topic. Students' presentation skills are supported by participation in seminars and the Student Scientific Conference, where they present the results of their scientific work in front of an expert audience. Thanks to the mentioned approach, graduates of the master's degree of the Physics of Condensed Matter study programme also find employment in positions outside the academic sphere, where adaptability and a creative approach are required.
