The Media Studies programme offered at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg s one of the pre-eminent centres for the critical, interdisciplinary and theoretical study of media in the southern hemisphere.

Our work touches a wide variety of fields, including economics, sociology, anthropology, geography, visual culture, international relations, popular culture and literature and is unified by a shared concern with the diverse influences of media on lived experience, culture and society in the global south.The Masters is offered by dissertation only. Students complete a piece of original research of approximately 40,000 words under the supervision of a member of the academic staff of the department. The degree can be undertaken part- or full-time.

The MA in Media Studies at Wits is a research-only degree, with no coursework components. Those admitted to the programme are required to conceptualise and undertake a major research project in close collaboration with their supervisor, culminating in a 50,000-word dissertation.

A bachelors degree with honours from Wits or another university with a 65% total mark aggregate

A supervisor from the Faculty of Humanities must be identified and approached prior to application
We do consider candidates with Honours degrees in areas other than Media Studies, provided that there is existing training in the social sciences and humanities, and a clear rationale for the interest in Media Studies.
