The Media Studies programme offered at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg s one of the pre-eminent centres for the critical, interdisciplinary and theoretical study of media in the southern hemisphere.
Our work touches a wide variety of fields, including economics, sociology, anthropology, geography, visual culture, international relations, popular culture and literature and is unified by a shared concern with the diverse influences of media on lived experience, culture and society in the global south.The Masters is offered by dissertation only. Students complete a piece of original research of approximately 40,000 words under the supervision of a member of the academic staff of the department. The degree can be undertaken part- or full-time.Programme Structure
Courses include:
- The MA in Media Studies at Wits is a research-only degree, with no coursework components. Those admitted to the programme are required to conceptualise and undertake a major research project in close collaboration with their supervisor, culminating in a 50,000-word dissertation.

- A bachelors degree with honours from Wits or another university with a 65% total mark aggregate
- A supervisor from the Faculty of Humanities must be identified and approached prior to application
- We do consider candidates with Honours degrees in areas other than Media Studies, provided that there is existing training in the social sciences and humanities, and a clear rationale for the interest in Media Studies.
