The Maxillo Facial and Oral Surgery programme offered at University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg is a speciality that combines surgical training with dental expertise to correct a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries, tumours, defects and deformities in the mouth, head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.
The Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery (MFOS) prides itself on its eclectic scope; teaching and training, research, and a broad scope of practice ranging from dentoalveolar surgery to all aspects of craniomaxillofacial and tumor surgery.
We are a department that aims to be on par with the latest advancements in maxillofacial and oral surgery. We believe that detailed surgical repetition leads to surgical excellence. We strive for excellence in patient care.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- This postgraduate training program includes rotations in General Surgery, Intensive Care Unit, Trauma, Plastic Surgery, and Oral Pathology with dedicated clinics in Orthognathic surgery, Implantology, Craniofacial Surgery and Facial Clefts including cleft lip and palate.

General requirements
- A bachelors degree of at least four years duration from Wits or another university or a bachelors degree followed by an honours degree. Working experience or other valid experience may be required. Admission to clinical degrees not included.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Dentist in category Independent practice
- At least two years’ experience as a Dentist post Community Service
- Successful completion of primary examination (Physiology, General Pathology and Anatomy) ATLS course are prerequisites
- Postgraduate qualification in MFOS, service in the public service and exposure to MFOS are highly recommended
- Basic Surgical Skills and Research Techniques courses may have additional benefits
