Overview
The Master of Science in Sustainable Management and Technology program from IMD Business School is offered by Enterprise for Society (E4S) on behalf of its three partner institutions: the University of Lausanne (UNIL), the Institute for Management Development (IMD), and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).
The program will equip the next generation of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs with the knowledge and skills necessary to co-create a more resilient, environmentally responsible and inclusive economy. Participants in the program will learn how to lead teams across multiple disciplines and solve complex problems in corporations, start-ups and NGOs. Graduates will be ready to integrate sustainability in the core of their activity – whether in the corporate or entrepreneurship arena – and conduct business in service of their organizations, the environment and society in general.
Career prospects
As an SMT Master student, you will be trained to become a leader, entrepreneur and manager able to navigate the new economic system that is currently shaping up.
In terms of skillset, you will be:
- Able to think about sustainability and technology disruption issues at a systemic level, and to integrate them into an organization’s strategy;
- Knowledgeable about critical current technologies (AI, security, robotics, digital, energy, life science);
- Strong in data analytics;
- Able to work in interdisciplinary and internationally diverse teams;
- Able to leverage managerial skills (sustainable accounting and finance, sustainable logistics, project management, etc.) to implement innovative sustainable solutions to complex problems.
Programme Structure
- The first three semesters (90 ECTS) consist of courses and team projects which are structured in three blocks, with sustainability being the guiding thread:
- A. Technology;
- B. Economics & Management
- C. Transferable Skills & Group Projects.
- In addition, a group of three courses called D. Integration Weeks aims at improving students’ effectiveness in three directions: personal, group and organizational effectiveness.
- The fourth semester consists in a Master Project based on an Internship in Industry (30 ECTS).

General requirements
- Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree either with an engineering profile or a management/economics profile and with a minimum average grade of 4.5 or equivalent over the entire Bachelor’s program.
- The admission is based on the quality of the application: excellent academic record, relevance of the Bachelor’s degree and motivation of the candidate (i.e. proven interest in topics related to sustainable management and technology).
- Holders of a degree from a Swiss University of Applied Sciences, i.e. HES/FHS, are not eligible.
