The History programme at University of Liverpool is to support you to become a fully-fledged independent researcher. You’ll prepare an original thesis under the expert guidance of two supervisors, becoming an expert in your chosen field.

We’re an interdisciplinary group of historians committed to an engaged approach to the global past. We place particular emphasis on addressing historical injustices through our work on the Holocaust, medical racism, slavery, and colonial and postcolonial violence. From the rise of the far right to climate change, health care, library provision, abortion, religious intolerance and knife crime, we pride ourselves on using historical research to inform key contemporary debates. The interests of our staff and postgraduate researchers reach from late antiquity right up to the present day, and encompass histories of Britain, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. We have some of the finest archive and library facilities in the country and regularly co-supervise interdisciplinary PhDs with colleagues from Archives and Records Management, Politics, Irish Studies, Music, Geography, Archaeology, Language, Cultures and Film, English and Criminology.

Programme Structure

Facilities

Research in History is characterised by its breadth and diversity.
The interests of our staff and PhD students span the medieval, early modern and modern periods, encompassing political, social, cultural, economic, military and diplomatic history, and ranging geographically across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas.
There are active seminar programmes linked to our research centres. These provide an opportunity for staff and postgraduates to present their work and engage with current research by visiting speakers from universities in Britain and further afield.

General requirements

Applications are welcome from suitably qualified candidates who wish to undertake research leading to a PhD in History on either a full- or part-time basis.

We ordinarily expect candidates for entry to our PhD programme to hold a first degree in the First or 2:1 class and a Master’s degree (preferably pass of 65% or higher) in a relevant subject area from a UK university, or EU/overseas qualifications of an equivalent standard.
