Programme Structure

PgCert

You must complete the archaeology core module (20 credits) plus one of the 20-credit core history modules below as part of your studies in order to exit with a PgCert qualification (60 credits).

Archaeology core module

• Think like an archaeologist (semester 1)

History core modules

• Unlocking languages and palaeography for historians (semester 1)
• Voices from the past: understanding and using oral history (semester 2)

You will choose one further 20-credit option modules (to make a total of 60-credits overall), which may include any of the following history or archaeology modules.

History - any available option module from the MLitt History of the Highlands and Islands, which may include:

• Castles in context: from medieval to modern 
• Contemplating the clearances
• Gender and the family in the highlands, 1700-1900 
• Maritime lives: the Scottish northern isles during the early modern period
• Resisting and reversing the Clearances 
• The lordship of the Isles

Archaeology:

• Archaeology of the highlands and islands
• Digital analysis in archaeology
• Early medieval archaeology
• Excavation (note: you will be responsible for covering the costs of any travel and subsistence involved)
• Exquisite islands
• Human remains in archaeology  
• Iron age in the Atlantic world
• Neolithic studies
• Research and dissertation skills
• Scottish historical archaeology 
• Vikings and Norse in the north Atlantic

Please note that some options modules are rotational and may not be available each year.

PgDip

History pathwayYou will study the following core module:

• Research skills in history (40 credits, year-long module)

Archaeology pathwayYou will study the following core module:

• Research and dissertation skills (20 credits, semester 2)

All students will also study one of the following 20-credit history core modules (whichever you didn't choose to study at PgCert level):

• Unlocking languages and palaeography for historians (semester 1)
• Voices from the past: understanding and using oral history  (semester 2)

You must have completed your chosen pathway's core module and both of the history core modules as part of your studies in order to exit with a PgDip (120 credits).

For the archaeology pathway, you will choose one further option module from those listed in the PgCert, ensuring an even split across the two subjects.

MLitt

You will complete a 60-credit research dissertation in either history or archaeology to achieve the award of MLitt History (180 credits).
