Overview
There is a growing need, both in Denmark and abroad, for expertise in maritime industries - from off-shore energy, shipping, fisheries, marine spatial planning, and coastal engineering – sectors that are expected to grow in coming years. Science-based engineering solution for sustainable blue growth requires both an understanding of the marine environment – both its physical and living components – as well as the knowledge and skill to implement engineering solutions in a marine setting. The marine environment presents enormous possibilities for development, the so-called blue economy. The oceans after all represent over 70% of the earth’s surface. However, it also provides ecosystem services that are often undervalued or overlooked. These include regulating global climate, a reservoir of biodiversity, and fisheries production. Responsible development of the blue economy requires both technical expertise and understanding of the ocean environment.
The Ocean Engineering programme from Technical University of Denmark (DTU) thus covers a wide range of courses in these varied areas. The study programs integrates these into a set of highly valued competences.
Career
The Ocean Engineering programme provides candidates with a unique set of components that are highly sought after in various marine engineering sectors.
These competences include knowledge of the physical challenges in constructing off shore installations, developing technologies for both surface and underwater observations, describing and modelling interactions with the natural marine environment, and the ability evaluate the sustainability of engineering activities across a broad range of metrics.
