Overview
Telecommunications is about the transmission, switching and processing of messages and information. Messages in the form of voice, images or data must be converted into electrical or optical signals. They are suitably encoded for fast, secure and interference-free transmission via electrical lines, optical fibers or by means of electromagnetic waves in free space (e.g. mobile communications). Topics of study are therefore the fundamental properties of electromagnetic waves, the description and design of communications components and systems, and digital signal processing.
