Overview
The International Master of Science in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea) at the University of Gothenburg, is a joint Master programme organized by eleven leading European universities in the field of marine sciences, supported by the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC).
Key Features
- The IMBRSea programme takes the strengths from the previous International Master of Science in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (EMBC+), and prepares students for the rapidly evolving demands of the blue bio-economy and research on the sustainable use of marine biological resources.
- This programme leads to a Degree of Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in Marine Biological Resources.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- Students first go to one of 6 universities where they will all have the Fundamental Module with the same common basic subjects.
- In the second semester it’s time for the Thematic modules and Professional Practice.
- During Summer (end of July-August) students participate in a Summer School and get a full experience in research in Tjärnö Marine Laboratory in Sweden.
- For the third semester students will follow Specialization Tracks in different universities.
- For the fourth semester, a thesis is carried out in the in any of IMBRSea’s associate partners around the world.

General requirements
- A prerequisite for admission is that applicants have a Bachelor (or Master) degree in biology, ecology, environmental sciences, oceanography, marine sciences, (bio)chemistry, biotechnology, geography, geology, veterinary medicine or other equivalent degrees, with minimum 180 credits. Which needs to be completed, at the latest, before the 1st of September of the academic year in which you start the IMBRSea programme.
- Knowledge of the English language is considered as a basic requirement to follow classes.
