This Programme Evaluation programme at University of Cape Town comprises five compulsory modules that run from February to October and aims to equip students with advanced programme evaluation knowledge and skills.
The research dissertation runs for 12 months, commencing in July of the first year of registration, and concluding with submission of the dissertation the following year. The dissertation aims to assess whether students have mastered the principles of programme evaluation and, are able to apply these to a real-life programme that they are expected to evaluate. Students who successfully complete the degree will be awarded an MPhil.
Assessment: The coursework component contributes 50% towards the final mark for the master’s degree. Students must pass each module in order to pass the course. Students are required to obtain at least 50% for their dissertation. The dissertation component contributes 50% towards the final mark for the degree. Students must pass both the coursework and the dissertation in order for the degree to be awarded.
Readmission rules: The programme cannot be repeated. There are no examinations or supplementary examinations.
Distinction rules: The degree may be awarded with distinction if students obtain an overall mark of 75% or higher and a subminimum of 70% for both the coursework and research dissertation component of the degree.
Application information: Students applying for the Master of Philosophy (Programme Evaluation) must apply online using the University’s application process by the end of November in the year preceding that for which the application is made.

General requirements
- The minimum admission requirements is an honours degree or a four-year professional bachelor’s degree at NQF level 8. Both types of degree’s should include a component in quantitative research methods. Please note that a bachelor’s degree or an NQF level 7 or below are not accepted.
- In order to qualify for selection students should have achieved an average of 65% for their honours / four year professional bachelor’s degree.
