Overview
The aim of the Molecular Biotechnology course at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is to train research biotechnologists who have solid specialist knowledge and skills in the field of biochemistry and physiology. We understand the term "biotechnology" to focus on the identification, further development, utilization and application of processes and components in/from microorganisms (prokaryotes and fungi).
Right from the start, there is always an intensive reference to pharmaceutically active substances and to the identification and development of new drugs and biological control agents for crop protection.
The course thus lays the foundations for later interdisciplinary work in a research-oriented environment. It is therefore of interest to people who have a broad interest in chemical, biological and biotechnological issues and see their strengths in the life sciences. The course is explicitly not designed to train biotechnologically oriented process engineers or mechanical engineers.
Professional Fields
In the Molecular Biotechnology Master's course, graduates have acquired basic knowledge and skills in the fields of biochemistry, microbiology and biotechnology, among other things. Furthermore, the basics of molecular biotechnological research were taught.
Graduates of the Master's degree in Molecular Biotechnology have in-depth knowledge that enables them to start their careers at an intermediate career level. Anyone who wants to get to a higher career level usually completes a doctorate. PhD degree.
