The aim of the MEd Research on Teaching and Learning programme, offered by TU Munich, is to qualify young academics for the interdisciplinary context of educational sciences and psychology.

About

Objectives

With regard to empirical educational research, particular attention is paid to the study of teaching and learning processes in a wide variety of educational contexts. It aims to qualify for a career in research or taking leadership positions in educational institutions. Thanks to close links with the Faculty Graduate Center, the Master's programme also facilitates graduates who subsequently wish to study for a doctorate.

Professional competencies

Students explore key theories, concepts, methods and findings of empirical educational research and focus on teaching and learning in a variety of educational contexts. This enables them to gain coherent knowledge and in-depth understanding of

  • institutions in education systems and quality development and assurance in these institutions
  • teaching and learning processes and their determinants in formal learning settings such as the classroom
  • educational concepts and their assessment
Career

Empirical educational research is a growing field. This is shown by the establishment of professorships that focus on empirical research in educational science and teaching methodology. In this field, particular attention is paid to the study of teaching and learning processes in a wide variety of educational contexts. In addition, a large number of foundations, ministries and research organizations in Germany are very active in issues relevant to teaching and learning both in and out of school, and are resolutely calling for evidence-based support for initiatives. Organizational developments in universities and research institutions also increases demand for staff who are qualified in the area of education.

Audience

The program is aimed at students who hold a Bachelor’s degree in educational science, psychology, education, secondary school teaching or vocational training (alternatively also the first Staatsexamen). The program is aimed at international as well as national students.

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).     The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

  • This programme accepts GRE® scores, however, has not provided a recommended or minimum required score range.

    The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.     • For application to TUM, you must submit the results of the General Test. The Subject Test alone is not sufficient
  • a classified Bachelor degree awarded by a German or foreign university after a program of at least six semesters or an at least equivalent qualification in the programs: scientific education for teachers at grammar schools, vocational training, pedagogy/educational science and psychology or comparable programs
  • a proof of successful participation in either a lecture, seminar or project on research methods for the social sciences
  • A proof of language competence in English
