Overview

A degree in Computer Science - Computer Networks at the University of Antwerp corresponds with a competent professional with a scientific background. After obtaining the degree you will be able to:

adopt new technological developments in the respective disciplines within computer science
exploit these developments where applicable in their professional context
when required, make original contributions to the further development of the discipline

It is our ambition to offer a unique programme, which is based on recommendations from renowned scientific organisations such as the ACM, IEEE and SIAM. Our programme emphasises deep knowledge and sufficient flexibility and as such our graduates are highly demanded in both industrial as well as academic positions.

Many computer scientists end up in the Research and Development departments of industrial organisations (both large and small) to address technological challenges of all kinds.
Your background allows you to deal with fast changing environments; which is a necessary prerequisite for project management positions.
A scientific career in academia, where you think about in depth problems of computer science. Together with other scientists and companies you work inside European or international projects on a variety of disciplines.

You can choose between three majors:

Computer Networks
Data Science
Software Engineering

The programme focuses on Research and Development. In contrast to the Dutch programme equivalent, there are no majors/minors such as Education or Management.

The two years are built out of 4 blocks:

Master thesis "30 credits" (compulsory)

Elective courses "30 credits"

General competences "30 credits" (compulsory)

Two research internships "15 credits each" (compulsory)

A full-time one-year study programme amounts to 60 ECTS credits (30 ECTS credits per semester), which implies a student workload of about 1500 to 1800 hours. One ECTS credit stands for 25 to 30 hours of work including contact hours, preparatory work, study and assessment.

Since the programme is taught in English, candidates with a prior degree issued outside Belgium, the Netherlands or Luxembourg are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English. They can do so in two ways:

Either by submitting a language certificate showing their TOEFL iBT, IELTS, ITACE or Cambridge English certificate (the level required can be checked on: www.uantwerpen.be/admission)

Or by submitting proof that your prior university degree was taught in English, provided that the transcripts confirm that the entire study was completed in English.

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.

Funding

The University of Antwerp directly participates in the selection process of certain scholarship programmes (Scholarships with UAntwerp participation). In addition students can also check if they are eligible for external funding opportunities (External scholarships). Scholarships are available for Bachelor, Master, PhD or for shorter stay programmes.

Do check with the Belgian embassy in your country whether they have any funding options.

Note that the tuition fee for most of UAntwerp's study programmes is reasonable when compared internationally. The cost of living for students in Belgium is about €16,000 per year.
