Overview
The MS in tourism studies is a two-year theoretical and practical programme at the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences.

At the conclusion of the Tourism Studies programme at University of Iceland, the student shall be able to demonstrate knowledge, ability and skills beyond that achieved at the previous level, as listed below:
- The student has obtained an in-depth knowledge of the applicability and/or theoretical values within a specialised field of tourism studies.
- The student has a profound understanding of main methodologies and approaches that are used within the chosen specialised field.
- The student can turn knowledge and understanding gained into applied use in a disciplinary work within the field of tourism
- The student can design, plan, develop and carry out an independent research.
- The student can write a research proposal and grant applications.
- The student can design and compile comprehensive research project within tourism studies.
- The student has mastered the methodological approaches and techniques of processing the relevant specialised material . The student does also have a good overview and insight into other possible methods to choose from.
- The student can come up with new theories within own field of studies.
- The student can assess different methods independently and appropriate them analytically in problem solving research.
- The student can use relevant software for data processing.

General requirements
- A BS or BA degree or equivalent with minimum average grade of 7,25. In addition there may be some preliminary course requirements before starting the actual MS programme. Students who have not finished a bachelor's degree in tourism studies need to take extra credits
- Applicants are asked to submit a letter of motivation, 1 pages, where they should state the reasons they want to pursue graduate work, their academic goals and a suggestion or outline for a final paper.
- Letters of recommendation (2) should be submitted. These should be from faculty members or others who are familiar with your academic work and qualified to evaluate your potential for graduate study.
