The Philosophy programme is offered at the University Of Ibadan.
The Department also offers postgraduate courses leading to the award of the following degrees in philosophy: Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Professional Ethics (MPE), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). The three semesters M.A. degree programme in philosophy is designed to enable students do more intensive work in the principal areas of philosophy than is possible at the undergraduate level.
It is also designed to familiarize students with and train them in more contemporary areas and methods of philosophy. The department started the post-graduate programme in 1978 and has since graduated several students at the Master and Doctoral levels.

Programme Structure

The Department also runs combined degree programmes with the following Departments: Classics, English, Communication and Language Arts, Linguistics, Mathematics, Political Science and Religious Studies, leading to the award of the B.A. degree in Philosophy/Classics; Philosophy/English; Philosophy/Communication and Language Arts; Philosophy/Linguistics; Philosophy/Mathematics; Philosophy/Political Science; Philosophy/Religious Studies. Approval for the combined honours programme is given at the beginning of 200 level of study.

General requirements

Candidates for admission to higher degree programmes shall normally be graduates of the University of Ibadan or other Universities/Institutions recognised by the Senate. Admission shall be made by the Postgraduate College on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
Candidates without any previous higher degrees in the relevant discipline may be admitted only to either the Degree of Master or the Professional Degree of Master.
Candidates with recognised “Research Higher” Degree in the relevant discipline may be admitted to the M.Phil or Ph.D. degree programmes as appropriate, on the recommendation of the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee.
Where, in respect of an otherwise eligible candidate with a higher degree, a firm recommendation for admission to the Ph.D. degree programme cannot be made, a Faculty may recommend that a candidate be admitted provisionally to the programme pending an assessment report.
