Overview

The Department of Microbial Biotechnology was commissioned as an individual component of the School of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering in the year 2008. The academic activities of the department are being executed by four teaching staff, one Professor and three Assistant Professors. The primer course, M.Sc. Industrial Biotechnology which was incepted in 2001 under the department of Biotechnology, is now being offered under the aegis of department of Microbial Biotechnology.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The PEOs of the Microbiology MSc program offered at Bharathiar University describe accomplishments that graduates are expected to attain within five to seven years after graduation:

• Graduate would become a microbiologist involved in research

• The candidate shall become an entrepreneur commercializing his own microbial product

• The candidate would be able to join Industries maintaining quality of products

• The candidate would be able to establish a clinical diagnostic laboratory

• The graduate can become a teacher of microbiological subjects in schools or colleges

• The graduate can become a bioprocess engineering designing fermentation processes

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

• Know the role of microorganisms in human life

• Explain the causes of infectious diseases

• Capable of identifying microorganisms from various sources

• Capacity to design a fermentation process using a microbe

• Capable of constructing a recombinant strain for commercial purpose
