Fundamental and Applied Geosciences

Overview

Novosibirsk State University offers an international Master’s Program to educate high-level specialists in several geoscience fields. Graduates will be experts in a broad range of topics in the fundamental Earth sciences and applied geo-technologies.

Approximately half of the educational program is comprised of mandatory review courses with general information in different disciplines including Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Petrology, and others.

Another half of the program includes elective courses providing in-depth knowledge in disciplines directly related to the student’s scientific interests. Most of the courses include practical exercises with real experimental materials and data. This program is designed to promote the use of modern technologies and advanced analytic methods in Geoscience.

An important aspect of studying at NSU is that it takes place in a unique research and innovative environment that includes the Novosibirsk Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences research institutes and Novosibirsk TechnoPark. This location means courses are taught by established researchers from these institutes with outstanding records of publications and substantial experience in scientific research and thesis projects are based on current scientific research. In addition to the scientific and technological subjects in the Program, students learn how to write research articles, present scientific results, prepare grant proposals, and other useful skills. NSU also provides Russian language courses. 

The program also focuses on developing independent research activities, broadening scientific horizons, fostering an ability to analyze and summarize information from various geological science fields, developing a multidisciplinary approach to solving fundamental and applied geological problems, and presenting research on an advanced scientific level within the framework of the subjects covered. Ultimately, all of the above is dedicated to training high-level, competitive specialists at Novosibirsk State University while improving the holistic understanding of the geological picture of the World.

Program goal

This Fundamental and Applied Geosciences program from Novosibirsk State University seeks highly motivated applicants interested in a career in high-tech multi-disciplinary studies in Geology and Geophysics. It is designed for people with two types of educational backgrounds:

• students with a background in Geoscience who want to expand their knowledge in the field of modern technologies and advanced analytic methods;
• students with a background in Mathematics, Physics, IT and Computational Technologies who want to expand their knowledge in the field of Geoscience.
