Overview
The aim of the Global Governance and Sustainable Development program of Tohoku University is to enhance one’s ability to advance global governance and sustainable development, two crucial tasks in the world today. The challenges associated with these tasks are complex and inter-linked (see the figure below). To illustrate, one of the major objectives of governance is to strike a balance between economic development and environmental conservation. The notion of development is becoming broader, being implicated in issues such as human security and resource recycling. Furthermore, the management of the global environment requires local responses, the prerequisites of which include good governance and human development.
This being so, what is required for global governance and sustainable development is the ability to question conventional wisdom and to design innovative analytical frameworks on the basis of inter-disciplinary knowledge. This program aims to develop such ability through a combination of critical reviews of theories and problem-oriented empirical studies.
Tohoku University trains the students to become:
- Individuals with strong wills and extraordinary skills to advance global governance and sustainable development, the two crucial tasks in the world today
- Individuals who are able to question conventional wisdom and to design innovative analytical frameworks on the basis of inter-disciplinary knowledge
- Individuals who can tackle various global challenges, by taking scientific and evidence-based approaches to investigate their structure and solutions
- Individuals who expand their intellectual networks globally, by taking advantage of their superior communication and presentation skills
- Individuals who maintain high standards of professional ethics and possess extensive expertise, and therefore are capable of conducting research at leading research institutes and/or taking on complex tasks at international organizations around the world
