At a glance

The Department of Chemistry "Ugo Schiff" of the University of Florence offers a two-year Master's degree course in Advanced Chemical Sciences and Technologies to train and educate the next generation of chemists on the cutting-edge aspects of research in Chemistry of Materials and Life Sciences that will give them the skills required for an advanced career in industry and academia.

The curriculum combines a solid foundation of mandatory courses in chemistry and biochemistry with a range of elective subjects, ensuring both a strong scientific background and the flexibility to tailor individual study paths. The laboratory practice is common to almost all courses.

The program is aimed at Italian and international students with a BSc degree in Chemistry or similar BSc degrees as detailed in the admission rules of the regulation.

At the end of this degree students will have acquired skills in the design, synthesis and characterization of materials and biological molecules. To this end, the Course will also provide elements of other disciplines such as Biology, Medicine and Materials Sciences. The achieved competences and skills will cover the study of inorganic and organic materials, small bioactive molecules, complex biological macromolecules and advanced analytical techniques.

General requirements

Graduates holding a Bachelor’s Degree in class L-27 (Chemical Sciences and Technologies), in accordance with ex-DM 270/04, or in class L-Sci-Mat (Materials Science), are granted direct access, as they are considered to fully meet the curricular requirements necessary to undertake Master ’s-level studies.
Graduates from other degree classes may also be admitted, provided they meet the following minimum curricular requirements:
20 ECTS in mathematics, physics and computer science.
50 ECTS in analytical, biological, industrial, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry and chemical engineering, with proven theoretical and laboratory activities in analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.
15 ECTS for internship, job-oriented and other activities, including the presentation of the thesis.
