On this course, you will learn:

  • The importance of market research, what producers and directors are buying right now, and how to deliver market-focused music.
  • The technical aspects of writing to picture, spotting a film, and working with hit points and markers.
  • Music editing, an important skill for composers both in terms of boosting productivity and also for opening new avenues of work.
  • The research and critical thinking skills to help you put media music in context.

Accreditation

On successful conclusion of your course, you will be awarded a Master of Arts degree from the University of Chichester. All UK degrees, including those of the University of Chichester, are recognised worldwide. The qualification is fully accredited in the UK and subject to regular quality control, review and external invigilation to ensure the highest academic standards are maintained.

Audience

This course is all our student's go-to for learning how to become a composer for media. If film, television, adverts, corporate, and other forms of linear media are your focus, then this course if for you.

Lecturers

All tutors are current working professionals, many at the highest level in the business. They have credits including Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Iron Man: Armoured Adventures, Die Hard 4, Pokémon Movies and hundreds more. They’ve worked for every major film and game studio including Disney, Dreamworks, Marvel, Universal, Warner Bros, Sky, BBC, ITV, NBC and many others.

Your main application must be in by the 1st of the month before your start date. Any supporting portfolio and documentation can be handed in 2 weeks later.

You will mostly be graded on your practical ability. All assignments come with written write-ups where you will detail your approach. Each module will have at least one 'Formative' assignment, which is considered research and practice for the final 'Summative' assignment, which will be your final grade for that module. All Summative assignments are marked at least twice.

General requirements

Applicants are required to have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in any subject. A limited number of places are available for non-degree holders (see the ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ section). We assume that completion of an undergraduate degree shows the applicant has the required level of academic ability to complete the course. Where applicants have been out of education for some time or come from a very different discipline, we can provide additional support through one to one tutorials during their course.

Technological requirements

Being an online degree, students are required to have the equipment they need to produce their own work. This means a Digital Audio Workstation capable of importing video files, as well as sample libraries/synths to compose their own music.Full requirements can be found on our website, so feel free to take a look or reach out to us directly.

All students are quoted in GBP. All invoices are through the payment provider 'Flywire'. This allows you to pay the full fee in your home currency.

Funding

For UK students, you may be eligible for government student loans to pay for your course fees, maintenance and additional equipment. This amount is paid directly to you by the Student Loan Company.

We try to provide exceptional value to all students both in the UK and the rest of the world. Our fee structure is extremely competitive and, as such, does not allow us as much room for bursaries or scholarships as some providers. However, on occasion, we do award part scholarships to exceptionally talented applicants, particularly those from disadvantaged or under-represented groups, to help them fulfil their potential.
