This course is designed to prepare you, both creatively and technically, to work as a sound designer and eventually an audio lead or audio director.Taught and mentored by top video games sound designers, you will learn how to create the sounds that brings the world of the video game to life. You will also learn to use audio middleware software to implement your sounds into the game engine Unity.

On this course, you will learn:

  • To create game sound effects both from your own recordings and sourced from commercial libraries.
  • How to use inexpensive and readily available field recording equipment to produce atmospheres, spot-effects and Foley.
  • Technical skills like creating and implementing Foley, weapons, impacts and vehicle sounds.
  • Business skills to help you produce a winning portfolio that will help you into a new career.
  • Collaborative and remote working skills, vital in such a connected global industry.
  • To imagine a sound world that fits perfectly with the ethos of the game.

Accreditation

On successful conclusion of your course, you will be awarded a Master of Arts degree from the University of Chichester. All UK degrees, including those of the University of Chichester, are recognised worldwide. The qualification is fully accredited in the UK and subject to regular quality control, review and external invigilation to ensure the highest academic standards are maintained.

Audience

This course is aimed at those looking to build a career in creating sound effects for video games. Our courses are career focused, so you can expect to be tackling tasks that a sound designer would expect to face in their working life. A student should have an understanding of the skills needed before joining the course, and already be comfortable in their software of choice.

Lecturers

Our tutors are all current working professionals, many involved at the highest level in the business. The tutors who will be giving you individual feedback have video game audio credits including Batman: Arkham Origins, Dragon Age, Tomb Raider, Bioshock, and hundreds more. They’ve worked for every major film and game studio including Blizzard, Nintendo, Capcom, and 2K Games.

General requirements

Applicants are required to have successfully completed an undergraduate degree in any subject. A limited number of places are available for non-degree holders, under the 'Recognition of Prior Learning' application method.

We also require applicants to complete a short application task, and potentially submit a portfolio of work depending on the course. All information can be found on the course page on our website.

Technological requirements

Being an online degree, students are required to have the equipment they need to produce their own work. This means a Digital Audio Workstation capable of importing video files, as well as sound libraries to aid with their assignments

You will also need a copy of Wwise and Unity. The exact version numbers are important but we can instruct you on this during the course.

All students are quoted in GBP. All invoices are through the payment provider 'Flywire'. This allows you to pay the full fee in your home currency

Funding

For UK students, you may be eligible for government student loans to pay for your course fees, maintenance and additional equipment. This amount is paid directly to you by the Student Loan Company.
