Overview
The focus of the Gastroenterology programme from University of Liverpool is led by academics with basic science and clinical backgrounds. We also conduct clinical research and trials at the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool. Research involves a whole range of experimental techniques, from mechanistic studies involving cell-lines and organoid cultures through to patient-patient sample studies and clinical trials.
Our research areas specifically focus on:
- Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers
- Molecular pathogenesis
- Regulation of apoptosis in the GI tract
- The gastrin family of peptides
- Epithelial glycobiology
- Galectins in cancer progression and metastasis, development of targeted therapeutic drugs and biomarkers
- Drug-induced gastrointestinal toxicity
- Gastric and intestinal pathophysiology
- Basic and complex 3D ‘mini-gut’ organoid models of human GI disease and drug-induced toxicity
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Role of immune cells
- Bacterial factors
- The development and assessment of novel therapies
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in GI disease
- Gut microbiota, enteric infection and bacteraemia.

- Applicants for postgraduate research study at Liverpool are normally expected to hold a UK first degree with a First Class or Upper Second Class degree classification, or a Second Class degree plus a Master’s degree.
- Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted, and their equivalence will be evaluated on the basis of the information provided by the National Academic Recognition and Information Centre (NARIC) as well as internal guidance based on our experience of a qualification’s suitability as a preparation for our programmes.
