Overview

This Indology and Tibetology MA course at University of Hamburg includes the ability to independently work on primary sources in one of the languages of the three focal points, the ability to carry out theoretical-reflective research in the area of the selected profile, as well as argumentative scientific discussion in various cultural contexts.

In joint cross-sectional modules, the students are taught the general methodological foundations necessary for the later exercise of an activity with professional practice, in consulting or research. In addition, by choosing a profile at a high academic level, students specialize in one of the following three areas:

Indology with a focus on Sanskrit (ancient and central Indian languages, literatures, religion and philosophy)
Indology with a focus on Tamil studies (texts and handwriting in classical Tamil, basic knowledge of contemporary literary language)
Tibetology (historical sources in classical Tibetan written language; knowledge of the contemporary language)

Career Opportunities

The master’s course enables a variety of fields of activity, such as research at universities, teaching at other institutions, employment in national and international organizations or companies, in publishing or journalism or in tourism.

Depending on the selectted profile: knowledge of Sanskrit or Tamil (for Indology) or knowledge of Tibetan (for Tibetology)
