The Urban Design program at the University of Sydney is ideal for graduates of the Bachelor of Architecture and Environments. Professionals and graduates in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning or similar areas will develop and extend their professional expertise; but we also welcome applicants from other disciplines.

Career paths

Professionals with good urban design knowledge and skills are highly sought after by private consulting firms, development organisations, and local and state governments, where they are required to prepare and evaluate urban design policies, strategies, frameworks, guidelines, concepts, master plans and programs, and be involved in the more detailed design and management of urban spaces.

Urban designers are crucial for solid development evaluation, and to enhance perspectives on urban conservation and transformation. There is also a small but growing demand for urban design educators and media commentators.

Admission to the Master of Urban Design requires:
an undergraduate degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, town planning, urbanism, geography or a related field; or
completion of the requirements of the embedded Graduate Certificate with an average mark of at least 65.
Based on the applicant's undergraduate performance, the Program Director reserves the right to require a portfolio of work indicating relevant design interests and capabilities for admission to the Master of Urban Design. A portfolio should only be provided if requested by the Program Director.
If English is not your first language, you may be able to prove English proficiency with an approved English skills test taken within 2 years of commencing the course.
