The Creative Writing program at the University of Sydney helps you to gain a deep understanding of theories and histories of writing and develop the core skills of writing, structuring and editing. We give you intimate access to Sydney’s literary life, including a constant calendar of readings, performances, major literary and cultural events, and a host of celebrated visitors.

The Creative Writing program at the University of Sydney supports all kinds of literary ambition in a setting that builds capacity, encourages diversity and experimentation, and supports professional writing. Fundamental to this degree are the core skills of writing, structuring and editing.

The Department of English at the University of Sydney is one of the world’s leading centres of literary practice and research. Our teachers are leading writers, critics and editors. They are current or previous poetry or fiction editors of leading Australian literary journals Southerly, Meanjin and Overland, and have judged the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and Australia Council Literature grants, among others.

Some Creative Writing students have become published writers during or after their candidature or have found careers in publishing and editing as well as teaching.
