The School of Social Sciences, part of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand, offers the disciplines of History; International Relations; Philosophy; Political Studies; Social Anthropology; and Sociology.
It provides one of the richest, most exciting and most innovative areas of study at the University and boasts many of South Africa’s leading internationally trained intellectuals, lecturers, researchers and writers in this field.

The School’s Bachelor of Arts degree is a three-year programme studied on a full-time basis. The purpose of this degree is to ground students in the study of humankind’s history, societies and arts, and this degree forms the basis for all study within Wits’ School of Social Sciences. The School also offers Honours, Masters and PhD postgraduate programmes.
