The M.Sc. in Physics at University of Göttingen offers the possibility to specialise in one of four focus Astrophysics and Geophysics, Biophysics and the Physics of Complex Systems. 


Why to study

The master's Program in Physics at the Georg-August University Göttingen is a research-oriented course of study that qualifies for demanding tasks in research and development and prepares for a PhD in physics. Our Faculty is characterized by a broad and internationally renowned research spectrum, students are involved in at an early stage.

The main research areas of the faculty are also reflected in the major fields of study. Every masterstudent has to choose one of them:

  • astrophysics and geophysics
  • biophysics and physics of complex systems
  • solid state and materials physics
  • nuclear and particle physics

Students will be integrated into existing research groups at the latest at the beginning of the Master's thesis phase of the programme in the third semester. Here, they will experience everyday research up close.

The master’s programme in Physics at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen aims to convey scientific competence, to enable graduates to solve problems with the methods of physics in the different areas of technology, business, finance and research. Successful graduates have many career opportunities, beginning with the application and development of physical methods in the area of high technology and medicine, to complex organisation and planning tasks, up to basic research at research institutes and universities.

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).

General requirements

Bachelor's degree in Physics or in related subject with at least three years of study and at least 180 Credits:

  • including at least 126 Credits in the field of physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology or computer sciences,
  • including at least 66 Credits in the field of physics,
  • including at least 12 Credits in the field of theoretical physics (quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics)
