Overview
The training required the residents to be equipped with medical knowledge to understand the psychopathology, complications and consequences of the disorders in accordance to the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability & Health).
Restoring optimal functioning are taught with the use of medications, specific interventions, physical moralities, physical training with therapeutic exercise, movement and activities modification, adaptive equipment and assertive device, prosthetic, orthodontics, robotic technologies and experiential training approaches.
The concept of holistic team approach is emphasized throughout the training in a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation program.
This Rehabilitation Medicine program from University of Malaya will provide medical graduates capable of combining the latest and evidence-based medicine rehabilitation approach with the optimum patient care standards that is the trademark of UM’s excellence in medicine.

Programme Structure
The programme of study comprises two stages as follows:
Stage I in the first year of study covering:
- Basic and Applied Sciences of Rehabilitation Medicine;
- Principles, Concepts and Practice of Rehabilitation Medicine;
- Rotational postings in disciplines related to Rehabilitation Medicine;
- The keeping of a log book by the candidate to document tasks undertaken
- Continuous assessments as prescribed by the Department
Stage II of study covering:
- Rotational postings in specialised Rehabilitation Medicine disciplines and disciplines related to Rehabilitation Medicine;
- research report;
- assignments;
- the keeping of a log book by the candidate to document tasks undertaken; and
- continuous assessments as prescribed by the Department.

General requirements
- The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and
- At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
- Other requirements
- Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
- Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
