Orthopaedic surgeons are highly regarded as the repair of muscular and skeletal injuries often result in the betterment of the patient’s life. From hip replacement surgery in senior citizens to the treatment of scoliosis in children, Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Malaya plays an important part in human beings doing basic actions, without pain. Specialisations are also common as many of the body’s most intricate musculoskeletal systems require specialist care e.g: the hands or spine.

Many countries are still short of orthopaedic Surgeon, and Malaysia will need to double the current number of specialists in this field to provide proper coverage for its population. Most modern hospitals are able to support advanced facilities like imaging and instrumentations.
With higher expectation of good functional outcome after treatment, Orthopaedic surgeons with proper training will always be needed in both public and private sectors.
Our department provides comprehensive training in all orthopaedic related subspecialities as follows:
- Foot and ankle
- Upperlimb and reconstructive and micro surgery
- Division Joint Replacement
- Limb Lengthening and Reconstructive surgery
- Orthopaedic Oncology
- Paediatric Orthopaedics
- Spinal Surgery
- Arthroscopy sports and joint reconstructive surgery
- Trauma Orthopaedic
We will also provide guidance a research project that is a requirement for the masters training orthopaedic.
Programme Structure
The programme of study comprises two stages as follows:
- Stage I comprising twenty four (24) months in Orthopaedic Surgery providing teaching/training in basic and applied medical sciences, principles of surgery, basic orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic traumatology.
- Stage II comprising twenty four (24) months in Orthopaedic Surgery including rotation through the following sub-specialities:
- Spinal Surgery
- Orthopaedic Oncology
- Paediatric Orthopaedics
- Upperlimb and reconstructive and micro surgery
- Arthroscopy sports and joint reconstructive surgery
- Arthroplasty
- Orthopaedic Traumatology
- Limb Lengthening and reconstructive surgery
- A candidate is required to keep a log book throughout his period of study to document tasks undertaken.
- No candidate shall be permitted to proceed to Stage II of the programme of study unless he has passed the Part I Examination.

General requirements
A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not the English language shall be required:
- To obtain a score of 600 for a paper-based total (PBT); a score of 250 for a computer-based total (CBT) or a score of 100 for an internet-based total (IBT) for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
- To obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic).
