Overview
The four year course, leading to the degree of Master of Paediatric Surgery from University of Malaya provides:
- Phase I of the program provides the candidates, a strong Foundation in the fundamentals, namely Applied Basic sciences relevant to Children’s surgery, which enables the candidates to learn the Pre, Intra and postoperative care and Metabolic care of neonates, infants and children.
- Provides Specialist training in General Paediatric Surgery and Specialist Paediatric Surgery. Resuscitation and intensive care of Neonates, infants and children and Pain management in children,
- Subspecialty training in Paediatric Surgery
- Exposes the candidates to research methodology.
The aim of this degree programme is to enable the candidates to practice independently in Paediatric surgery in a Malaysian hospital after a period of supervised training in Paediatric surgery and its subspecialties. It enables the candidates, with adequate Knowledge, Technical expertise, Social skills and responsibility (Health Advocacy), Values (Ethical issues), Attitudes and Professionalism needed to practice Paediatric Surgery.

They learn problem solving skills and scientific skills and will be able to develop clinical decision making skills and mange their patients with utmost care and commitment. They learn, Information management and Life long learning skills, which gives them Continuous Professional development opportunities and keeps them up to date with recent developments, and makes them good learners and Teachers. They learn to utilize available resources, in patient care effectively and in a cost-effective manner and become successful team players.
Career opportunities
To the qualified paediatric surgeon, career opportunities are excellent and they will address the manpower shortage in the country. They also have opportunities to subspecialize in paediatric surgery and provide high quality care to children in specialized areas, as advocated in the Best Practice guidelines.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- Stage I in the first year of study comprising Applied Basic Sciences and General Principles of Surgery and/or subspecialties in Surgery.
- Stage II in the second, third and fourth years of study comprising:
- Six (6) months in Paediatric Medicine, with rotation postings in Neonatology, Paediatric Intensive Care and Paediatric Oncology.
- Subsequent 2½ years (30 months): Training in Applied Basic Sciences relevant to Paediatric Surgery, including Embryology, Principles and Practice of Paediatric Surgery, and clinical problems in Paediatric Surgery
- Research project report or case book
- At the beginning of Stage II, a candidate should either
- undertake a research project and submit a research report not later than three months before the Final Examination; or
- submit a case book of 12 interesting cases in detail with review of the literature not later than three months before the Final Examination.

Other requirements
General requirements
- The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and
- At least two years of post-full registration clinical experience in surgery (inclusive of subspecialties) approved by the Senate.
- Other requirements
- Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
- Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
