Overview
The four year course at University of Malaya, leading to the degree of Master of Anaesthesiology (MAnaes) , provides:
- Specialist training in anaesthesia, pain medicine, resuscitation and intensive care,
- Subspecialty training in anaesthesiology,
- Exposure to research methodology.
The aim of the degree programme is to enable the anaesthesiologist to practice independently in anaesthesia in a Malaysian hospital as well as to inculcate a lifelong commitment to excellence and learning.
Benefits
- Six months after completing a four-year anaesthesiology training programme and receiving a degree in Masters of Anesthesiology (University of Malaya), the physician is eligible to be registered as an Anesthesiologist in the National Specialist Register in Malaysia.
- Department of Anesthesiology, University of Malaya is one of the accredited training institutions for the Anesthesiology Training Programme by the Malaysian Conjoint Examination Board for Postgraduate Medicine and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anesthetists (ANZCA).
- Upon completion of all training requirements, the anesthesiology graduate is then entitled to become a Member of Malaysian Society of Anesthesiologists.
Programme Structure
Courses include:
- Stage I in the first year of study encompassing clinical training in basic skills in anaesthesia and resuscitation for patient management
- Stage II comprising training in the second and third year of study in:
- clinical anaesthesiology and in non-anaesthesiology postings undertaken in rotation such as general medicine, radiology, emergency medicine, or any other posting as may be approved by the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study; and
- Research methodology, including the conduct of a research project in any field of anaesthesia, intensive care or pain management.
- Stage III comprising clinical training in the fourth year in specialised fields of anaesthesiology or intensive care or of anaesthesiology and intensive care.

Other requirements
General requirements
- The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and
- At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
- Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
- Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
