Internal Medicine (IM) specialists provide a service that is essential for the safe and optimum delivery of health care. Conditions managed by Internal Medicine specialists and its subspecialties represent a very high proportion of patients seen daily. Regardless of what speciality a patient is admitted, it is common that input from the Internal Medicine specialist is required from diagnosis to recovery.

Programme Structure

The programme of study comprises three stages as follows:

Stage I in the first year comprising: the study of basic sciences relevant to the practice of internal medicine; and clinical clerkship under supervision with emphasis on emergency medicine.
Stage II in the second and third year comprising: rotational postings of three months duration each in the following eight disciplines of clinical medicine:
Cardiology
Nephrology
Neurology
Respiratory Medicine
Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Haematology and Oncology
Endocrinology
Rheumatology and Infectious Diseases and Dermatology
and a research project
Stage III in the fourth year comprising posting in an approved sub-speciality or in general medicine in the Faculty or a recognised centre outside the Faculty

Possess a Bachelor’s Degree with a CGPA of not less than 3.00; or
For applicants with a CGPA of 2.50 – 2.99 (must fulfill at least one of the following):
Graduate from University Malaya; or
Accumulate at least one (1) year of work experience in related fields; or
Produce publications in related field; or
Receive a scholarship; or
Serve as a staff member of a government agency; or
Pass an interview by Faculty; or
Pass a Special evaluation by Faculty.
