Overview
Doctors of Internal Medicine are also trained to provide cross specialty consultations on the medical management of patients from other specialties.
Doctors of internal medicine can also choose to sub-specialize in one of a number of internal medicine specialties- for example Cardiology.Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology etc.

- Training is well rounded and allows the candidate to practice in a team model of care which incorporates all specialties of general medicine and main sub-specialities including those not available at other universities eg. Geriatric Medicine.
- All candidates will have practice skills in inpatient, outpatient as well as day care experience in some specialties.

Programme Structure
The programme of study comprises three stages as follows:
- Stage I in the first year comprising: the study of basic sciences relevant to the practice of internal medicine; and clinical clerkship under supervision with emphasis on emergency medicine.
- Stage II in the second and third year comprising: rotational postings of three months duration each in the following eight disciplines of clinical medicine:
- Cardiology
- Nephrology
- Neurology
- Respiratory Medicine
- Gastroenterology and Hepatology
- Haematology and Oncology
- Endocrinology
- Rheumatology and Infectious Diseases and Dermatology
- and a research project
- Stage III in the fourth year comprising posting in an approved sub-speciality or in general medicine in the Faculty or a recognised centre outside the Faculty

General requirements
- The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; and
- At least one year of post-full registration clinical experience approved by the Senate.
- Other requirements
- Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and
- Satisfies the Department responsible for the candidate’s programme of study in an Entrance Evaluation recognised by the Faculty.
