The mission of the Master Program in Software Engineering (MScSE) at Birzeit University is to provide a quality education in software engineering, to prepare students, in Palestine, to become professional software engineers, entrepreneurs and leaders that are able to develop competitive solutions that are innovative yet reliable so that they may contribute to developing the software industry.

Software Engineering program goals at Birzeit University

  • To train students with current and advanced relevant software engineering skills and practices, that enable them to compete effectively at a global level.
  • To instil among students the professional ability to analyze, assess and understand software engineering codes of conduct, legal and ethical values.
  • To improve students’ ability to work and function productively and effectively in teams including interdisciplinary teams, and demonstrate effective leadership skills.
  • To prepare students for doctoral programs in software engineering by developing the ability to carry out and evaluate theoretical and applied research in software engineering.
  • To develop technical leadership capabilities and project management skills to enable students pursue entrepreneurship and productive careers in software engineering.
  • To enrich students with applied technical communication skills to demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate ideas and outcomes, both orally and in writing, in a logical manner.

GPA admission requirements GPA Your GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a number that indicates how well or how high you scored in your courses on average. Usually a GPA scales between 1.0 and 4.0, however different countries and universities can have different grading systems.
GRE admission requirements GRE® The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. It contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.
GMAT admission requirements GMAT The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA. GMAT contains 4 sections - Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal. The score has a range from 200 - 800.

English requirements

IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).
TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at desiganated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
PTE Academic admission requirements PTE Academic PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.

General requirements

  • General Secondary Education Certificate Examination (Tawjihi) score equivalent to or higher than 65 percent.                                                    
  • Bachelor’s degree, from a university accredited by Birzeit University, in a field required by the program that the applicant wishes to enroll in. All applicants must have earned a “Good” academic standing. Applicants who have an “Acceptable” standing will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the university’s Academic Council based on recommendation by the relevant department, or program committee.
  • Two sealed letters of recommendation by faculty members who taught the applicant or two supervisors who oversaw his or her work, or a letter from each.
