About

The role of the NP in advanced nursing practice is grounded in knowledge of theory and expanded practice skills in areas of advanced clinical decision-making, research, consultation/collaboration, and leadership. Nurse Practitioners have advanced knowledge and decision-making skills in health assessment, diagnosis, and health care management of common and complex conditions. The purpose of the Master of Nursing-Nurse Practitioner (MN-NP) program is to prepare nurses at an advanced level to practice as nurse practitioners in a variety of practice settings.

Officially accredited/recognized by the Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, Newfoundland & Labrador, Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) is a large (enrollment range: 15,000-19,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees (i.e. certificates, diplomas, associate or foundation degrees), bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study.

Programme Structure

The MN program has two options: 1) Practicum (course based); and 2) Nurse Practitioner (NP) with two streams – Family/All Ages, and Adult. All program options are designed to prepare students in advanced practice in nursing. The advanced practitioner has a well developed knowledge base, uses critical thinking and demonstrates advanced skills in an area of nursing. Advanced nursing practice skills are developed through the testing of selected nursing interventions, the implementation of research findings, and the analysis and critique of theoretical work.

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

Bachelor's degree (minimum ‘B’ standing) in Nursing; an undergraduate statistics course; an undergraduate nursing research course; license to practice nursing in jurisdiction and minimum of one year of nursing practice experience for the practicum option, and two years of nursing experience for the NP option.
