Water is life. This incredible chemical with its numerous anomalies is the fundamental nutrient and ecosystem component for all living organisms. The aim of MSc in Environmental Engineering at University of Stavanger is to provide students with knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible water managers and engineers.


The Environmental Engineering programme at the University of Stavanger incorporates two specialisations:

Offshore Environmental Technology
  • Students that want to pursue a career in the oil and gas industry can choose this specialisation. The philosophy of this programme is to combine courses in offshore oil and gas exploration, production technologies and environmental management. The programme is suited for students that are interested in practical technological and administrative competences for sound environmental management in the offshore industries.
Water Science and Technology
  • The specialisation in Water Science and Technology is offered to students who want to focus on aquatic chemistry and ecology, and technologies for water and wastewater treatment. Being more natural science and research based, the programme provides students with fundamental and advanced competances in aquatic chemistry, environmental biotechnology and water process engineering.

With MSc in Environmental Engineering at University of Stavanger, graduates will be able to suggest, design and operate adequate environmental process technologies based on profound understanding of recipient aquatic system, in both offshore and onshore companies.


On completing the master programme, candidates qualify for positions within environmental technologyand management. For example, work in public and private research institutions, environmentalmanagement, or as a technical consultant / environmental advisor in industrial companies.

Academic requirements

GPA admission requirements GPA Your GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a number that indicates how well or how high you scored in your courses on average. Usually a GPA scales between 1.0 and 4.0, however different countries and universities can have different grading systems.

English requirements

TOEFL admission requirements TOEFL® IBT The TOEFL iBT® is given online through the internet at designated testing site. The test measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The score refers to the total score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading), each subject has a range of 0 - 30.
IELTS admission requirements IELTS The International English Language Test System (IELTS) tests your English-language proficiency on a scale of 1 – 9. The score refers to the combined average score of 4 subjects (writing, listening, speaking, and reading).
PTE Academic admission requirements PTE Academic PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. The score refers to a total score which ranges between 10 and 90.

General requirements

A Bachelor´s degree within one of the following disciplines is required:

  • Environmental Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Biotechnology

Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in related areas may also be considered if they have at least 30 ECTS credits in applied chemistry and 10 ECTS in bioscience/biotechnology.

All students are required to pay a semester fee of NOK 740 per semester.
