Overview
The specialised focus in Civil Engineering - Professional Focus In Civil Engineering at University of Liège is a specialisation oriented towards the design of structures (bridges, hydraulic networks, roads) and which allows the choice of optional courses (3 out of 10), on specific subjects: fire safety and seismic engineering, repair engineering, timber construction, risk management, etc.
The training is declined in the analysis of the smallest to the largest scale of the problem studied from the study of materials to those of structures. Mechanical, physical and chemical behaviors are evaluated in order to provide the civil engineer with the necessary tools for the design of any type of structure.
The second important step of the training concerns the dimensioning of the structure itself. Why and for whom? For how long? In what environment? This complementary approach will allow you to think about the different stages of the realization of a unique object: design, dimensioning, execution, management and even repair.
The structures considered include all major civil engineering works (tunnels, bridges, dams, roads...) and buildings (high-rise buildings...).
Career
As a generalist in construction and a specialist in the art of building, the civil engineer carries out a variety of missions. They concern important sectors of economic activity, including building, civil engineering, transport infrastructures, etc. They must be able to propose an optimal design of structures that meet the challenges of tomorrow, in terms of sustainable development and resilience to exceptional stresses.
The civil engineer may work in companies or research centers of all sizes, in a design or control office, in a general contracting firm, in public services and administration. Their training allows them to take charge of :
- the management of a building site,
- the general management of a project,
- the maintenance of infrastructures or real estate or any mission of expertise or research and development.
They can also choose to create their own company.
The versatile nature of the training allows the ULiège graduate civil engineer to practice his profession in disciplines that are further from his specialty, such as the manufacturing industry, business management, computer science, etc.
