Programme overview: corporate finance and financial markets

In this programme, students can tailor their degree by specialising in one of two areas of concentration:

Corporate finance prepares them for entry-level positions in e.g. investment or commercial banking, management consulting, or the finance and corporate planning functions of industrial firms.

The core topics students will learn about include

  • analysing and choosing investment projects
  • mergers and acquisitions
  • agency theory
  • investment banking and obtaining funds from the primary markets
  • project and trade finance, and
  • capital structure and dividend decisions

Financial markets prepares students for entry-level positions in e.g. investment management and strategy, venture capital and private equity, and risk management.

  • behaviour and determinants of security prices
  • their implications on portfolio management
  • behavioural finance and investor psychology

  • risk management, and
  • pricing options, futures, and other derivatives

Most Finance graduates find their first jobs in the financial industry, such as

                      The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.                       The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test.

                      Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

                    • Minimum required score:


                      The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).                     • Minimum required score:


                      The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

                    Academic Requirements

                    You need the following GPA score:

                    Required score: 3.5

                    Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

                    Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

                    • You need the following GMAT score:

                      Required score: 550

                      The GMAT - or Graduate Management Admission Test - is a frequent requirement for admission at management and business schools across the world. The GMAT score ranges between 200 and 800 and measures the verbal and quantitative reasoning of test-takers. Read more about the GMAT.

                    Study success and content of previous studies

                    Applicants with a weighted GPA of previous degree lower than 3.50 (Finnish ECTS evaluation) are not eligible for admission. The ECTS verbal grade equivalent for GPA 3.50 is “very good” (ECTS grading scale 1-5; where 5 is the highest grade).

                    GMAT score (or comparable GRE score)

                    GMAT or GRE is obligatory in admission group 2 (minimum score 550 in GMAT or equivalent GRE score).

                    Motivation letter

                    The letter is written in English into the electronic application system and the maximum length of the letter is 4000 characters (including space characters).
