Migration and Refugee Studies from The American University in Cairo enables students to learn about migratory issues concerning the region from the perspective of the region itself. Knowledge on migration and refugees has predominately been produced by countries of the North.  


Migration and Refugee Studies from The American University in Cairo will enable students to critically think about the knowledge produced on migration with the ultimate aim of building the skills of young scholars from the region to contribute to the production of knowledge in this important field. 


The knowledge gained while studying in the program may be applied in careers within institutions such as governmental, non-governmental and international agencies, as well as universities, research organizations and private corporations dealing with the multitude of issues connected with migration and refugee movements. Students have the option of pursuing concentrations in migration or in refugee studies.

  • Applicants seeking admission to the Master’s program should have an undergraduate degree of high standing (equivalent of a B grade or higher) within the field of Humanities and/or Social Sciences and meet the university’s language proficiency. 
  • Applicants for graduate study must have an accredited Bachelor’s degree with an academic record at a level sufficient to qualify for full or provisional admission.
