Key Features
Some of the themes of the History program at Brock University include imperialism, gender history, intellectual history, revolutions, labour systems, migration/ethnicity/identity, history of science and medicine, and history of computing. The program develops students’ critical analysis of both primary and secondary sources, provides the opportunity to explore historiography and methodology, and encourages engagement in vibrant debates. The co-op option further enriches students’ research and communication skills.
The Master of Arts in History provides students with training, through course work and research experience, in the various fields of history. The focus is on developing critical analysis of both primary and secondary sources. Students will be required to study historiography and methodology and will be encouraged to engage the vibrant theoretical debates in the study of history.

General requirements
- To be considered for admission to a Master’s program, a student will normally hold a four-year degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited university with a minimum 75% (mid-B) average over the last two years of full-time undergraduate study.
- You will need to submit your transcripts as well as the following program-specific materials:
- Three references are required.
- Statement of Intent — a one-page statement outlining your objectives in undertaking graduate study in the History Department at Brock University
- Sample of scholarly writing — this can be an essay, journal article, research paper, or thesis (single author only) of no more than 20 pages in length
