Programme description

A construction project is a vehicle to bring about change. A built environment professional with responsibility for the construction and maintenance of e.g. roads, houses, airports, schools and hospitals needs to manage various vital resources for this change to happen, such as cost, time, people and materials. At the intersection between technology and management, the overall aim of the programme is to train you to manage projects in a built environment context.  The Design and Construction Project Management degree is offered at the Chalmers University of Technology.

To work as manager in the built environment sector means having knowledge on construction specific elements like technical, environmental, legal, and contractual demands. You will also be trained in skills needed to manage projects involving knowledge on project management methods, financial accounting methods, Building Information Modeling (BIM), logistics, quality management, strategic management, and, real estate and facility management. The strong collaborative characteristics of the construction industry, where projects are carried out in temporary and interdisciplinary project organizations supported by networks of colleagues, also needs training and knowledge related to organizational culture, leadership, communication, team work, decision making, collaborative relations, and knowledge and learning.

As a complement to your engineering degree, this Design and Construction Project Management programme at the Chalmers University of Technology offers a possibility to acquire competencies required to perform on a high professional level in the construction and built environment sector.

Connections to research and industry

The programme builds on several scientific disciplines and courses are given by four different departments at Chalmers University of Technology; Civil and Environmental Engineering, Architecture, Technology Management and Economics, and Energy and Environment. All teachers involved in courses perform qualified research in management fields, and the lecturers provide a close connection to the research being performed. The teachers also have close cooperation with the construction industry. The faculty and our students collaborate with CMB, Centre for Management of the Built Environment.
Educational methods

The programme offers a mixture of conventional lectures and seminars, supported by online resources and a variety of external sources of information. It benefits from the use of case studies, real life projects and collaboration with industry. Student presentations and group work are important parts of the programme. A pedagogical idea is to enhance the students’ co-operative and communicative skills, to promote an efficient exchange of experiences and knowledge.

Career opportunities

Career opportunities can be found both in public and private organisations. The core fields are projects focusing on design and construction and on facilities management. Examples on roles are project manager in a construction project organization, working with project development at an architectural office, design manager in a consultancy firm, managing properties in housing company, developing health care facilities or working in supportive functions such as purchasing, sustainability, quality, health & safety.
