Overview
Experience cutting-edge research and teaching strength in a collegial environment within Dalhousie University 's Master of Arts in English programme.
The Department of English at Dalhousie University is one of the oldest in Canada. It has been in operation since 1865, when the first Professor of Rhetoric, James de Mille, was appointed. The Department awarded its first Master of Arts degree in 1903, and its first PhD in 1973.
Our graduate programmes are small and select, each year, we welcome eight to ten Master of Arts English students per year and about two to three new doctoral students. Students are attracted to our graduate programs by the research and teaching strength of our faculty, as well as the intimacy and collegiality of the department. Given the size of the programme, students can take the seminars they want, have personal, supportive relationships with their colleagues and advisors, and develop and pursue their scholarly interests.
Careers
Many past graduates have been awarded major fellowships in support of their doctoral studies, while others have gone on to successful careers in law, publishing, communications, journalism, and education.
